1. Chocolate

Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, both of which are toxic to cats. Even small amounts can cause vomiting, diarrhea, rapid breathing, and heart issues. Dark chocolate and baking chocolate pose the greatest risk.

2. Onions and Garlic

Allium vegetables like onions, garlic, shallots, and chives can damage a cat’s red blood cells, leading to anemia. Whether raw, cooked, or powdered, these foods should be avoided. Symptoms of toxicity include lethargy, weakness, and pale gums.

3. Grapes and Raisins

Grapes and raisins can cause kidney failure in cats, even in small amounts. The exact toxin remains unknown, but symptoms such as vomiting, decreased appetite, and lethargy can appear within hours.

Dairy Products

4. Dairy Products

Many cats are lactose intolerant, meaning they struggle to digest milk, cheese, and other dairy products. Consuming dairy can lead to upset stomach, diarrhea, and bloating. Instead, provide fresh water or vet-approved cat treats.

5. Raw Meat and Fish

While cats are carnivores, raw meat and fish can contain bacteria and parasites that cause food poisoning. Raw fish also contains thiaminase, which breaks down thiamine, leading to neurological problems. Cooked meats without seasoning are a safer alternative.

Prevent accidental ingestion by keeping harmful foods out of reach. If your cat eats something toxic, contact your emergency vet immediately.
